The supposedly never-changing village, seen as a kind of time capsule, loses that reputation rather quickly if you take enough mindful walks around it.
Upon closer inspection, you eventually start to ask yourself: “Why are the new houses getting flatter and grayer? Lol, why is there another parking lot being built? Where does everyone get their heavy decorative arsenal? And do the new quiet Teslas run over more cats than the old regular cars? But most importantly: How did this cityscape come to be, and how could it actually look different?”
The video “neighbourhood stroll” explores these questions by carefully selecting and collecting elements from public spaces, then mixing them in a Thermomix on setting 5 (reverse mode), and finally pouring them into a very long mold. Mmmm, tastes good!
This series was created as part of the cooperative project "WIE WIR (NICHT) LEBEN" with Arbeiterkammer Vienna.
Also part of the eponymous urban exhibition, which was on view from June 26 to September 1, 2024, at various locations across Vienna, NEIGHBOURHOOD STROLL was presented in FAKTory und as premovie in the programme of VOLXKINO.
