This study programme focuses on the realization of applied photography and time-based media tasks through the media of photography and moving image.

The focus is on exploration and elaboration of new solutions (in terms of content and technology) and the development of a unique visual language. Important personal requirements include curiosity and power of imagination, intuition, social competence and perseverance.

Entrance Exam 2026


Entrance Exam Part 1 (online)

Upload of Application documents:
January 8th 2026 until January 22th 2026 (1 pm, Vienna time/CET).

The application documents will be submitted in digital form. All documents must be submitted in one PDF file. The PDF must not exceed 50MB and has to contain the following:

  • work samples, mainly photography
  • if applicable: links to moving image works on Youtube or Vimeo
  • informal text explaining the motivation of the application 
  • CV with photo

The online application is done in two steps:
1. Registration on the university application website with the following personal information:

  • name
  • adress
  • e-mail
  • passport or ID number
  • scan/photograph of ID or passport
  • passport photo

Please select Design (diploma) Applied Photography and Time-based Media under Application.
After registration, the access data for the portfolio upload will be sent to you via e-mail. 


2. Upload of your Portfolio
The PDF can be overwritten until the deadline. The PDF file that is on our server after the deadline is valid. LINK to online registration and portfolio upload: https://application.uni-ak.ac.at/


To avoid last-minute technical problems, please make sure to plan the upload with enough margin before the deadline! If required, technical support can be requested via entry-support@uni-ak.ac.at. Registrations after the deadline will not be considered.

Entrance Exam Part 2 (in presence / For valid reasons, this can also take place online in exceptional cases.)

This will take place in the department in Vienna between 23.02.2026 and 06.03.2026. Please bring a camera (smartphones or Polaroid cameras are also acceptable) and a laptop, if possible.

The results will be communicated to participants until 13.03.2025.
